The Jaguar (Panthera onca) is a species that has been venerated by pre-Hispanic cultures since ancient times, this species was one of the most important for the Olmec, Maya and Aztec cultures, since in each one it had meaning related to its deities .

 

 

The Mayan Culture was the  animal specie wich had the most relevance since we can find a large number of temples, sculptures, symbols and even names of kings that reflected its importance for this great culture.

 

The Jaguar was an anomal that protected the underworld, the place where the Maya believed they went after death and was related to the sun god Kinich Ahau.
